Ngā Kaitiaki is dedicated in educating our local community towards sustained environmental practices, pest control within our local ngāhere (forest) while also reintroducing natural medicinal alternatives passed down from our ancestors. Ngā Kaitiaki currently facilitate two NZQA recognized courses designed to up skill our students towards vocational pathways that implement a cultural and spiritual component towards environmental practices.
Te Hiringa o te Taiao - Environmental Practice
Te Hiringa o te Taiao is the concept of a collective approach to educate others in ways to help better preserve our natural resources. Students can study a level 4 NZQA accredited course where they can learn about environmental sustainability in a marae based learning environment. Wānanga are hosted monthly at Marae around the Russell State Forest and are facilitated by eight local kaitiaki who together with their expertise and skills have volunteered to collaboratively educate local iwi in sustainable practices.
